A Neophyte’s guide to fly fishing
So you want to learn how to fly fish! THAT’S GREAT! It’s truly a challenging and exciting way to catch fish. I can say this since I’ve been fly fishing for nearly fifty years, and though I don’t profess to know everything there is to know about fly fishing (there are experts who have devoted their entire life to it), I’m confident that I can provide the necessary basics that will enable you to be making that first cast before you know it.
As a neophyte, learning what’s needed to become a fly fisherman or fisherwoman may seem daunting. There’s a certain mystique to a sport that’s been around since the first recorded writings around 200AD. If you would like to know more about the history of fly fishing, click here. Please don’t be intimidated by what you hear or read. I promise that you will succeed because you’ll have a mentor (that’s me), just as I did when I started (long before computers and the internet).
My mentor was a retired dentist named Kenneth Igo. He was the first true expert fly fisherman that I came to know. We met on a fly fishing trip when I was the neophyte. Although I had been fly fishing many times before, I never had any real guidance in the finer aspects of the sport until I met Dr. Igo. You can read more about my introduction to fly fishing the way it’s supposed to be done by clicking on “About Us”. You will read how this neophyte began a love affair with fly fishing that is still intact to this day.
My purpose in establishing this website is to provide you with the knowledge of fly fishing basics that you will need to begin your own love affair with this wonderful sport. With the information contained in neophyte fly fishing basics and dedication on your part you have a jump start on learning a wonderful sport
As your mentor, here is what I’m going to do for you. On this website you will:
- Be referred to books and e-books on fly fishing.
- Learn about fly rods, reels, line, leaders and other equipment and where you can buy them.
- Learn how to cast a fly rod.
- Learn about what flies to use and when.
- Learn how to read the stream.
- Learn how to hook and play fish.
- Learn how to fly fish for different kinds of fish.
As I’ve said, this site is dedicated to not only teaching fly fishing basics and getting you properly equipped, but making sure that you will be a ready to join the millions of fly fishermen and fisherwomen that delight in that remarkable sense of accomplishment that comes from catching a game fish on a fly rod. That’s what Neophyte Fly Fishing Basics will strive for, nothing less. Oh, by the way, there’s no guaranty that you’ll always catch fish. That’s up to the fish Gods, and believe me, they can be very fickled.
Soli Deo Gloria
